Mercury Vapour Lamps

The 2005 Reptile Lighting Survey Results

Introduction to Mercury Vapour Lamps - what they are, how they work, what they are suitable for, and what types are available.

IMPORTANT NOTICE (August 2010)
NONE
of the lamps on sale today are the same as the lamps featured in this section - with the exception of the Zoo Lamps .

Every lamp - ZooMed Powersun, T-Rex Active UV Heat, and ReptileUV MegaRay - now has totally different specifications.

We are doing our best to bring this section up to date but until this is done, we are leaving the original pages here, because they still carry useful basic information about mercury vapour lamps.

BUT PLEASE DO NOT BUY A LAMP BASED ON THE UVB OUTPUT YOU SEE DESCRIBED HERE. These old sets of results and charts are NOT at all accurate and may be very misleading in some cases.

Spread Chart Summary: the characteristics of the beams of all the Mercury Vapour Lamps on test. NB (added Aug 2010) THE SHAPE OF THE BEAMS ARE STILL VERY SIMILAR (2010) BUT THE UVB OUTPUT IS NOT THE SAME. Please do not rely on these figures as a guide to output
